Weekly wine picks for 7/31/05

Rombauer 2004 Napa Chardonnay $29.99

Back with a vengeance after an absence of several months, the 04 rendition is no less a contender for the country’s favorite despite the so called trend for leaner white wines. Rich gold color accompanied by its traditional buttery texture with aromas of apples and pears and a hint of citrus. On the palate the plush feel of velvet comes to mind carrying the opulent fruit intermingled with luxurious toasty oak lingering indefinitely through the finish.

Drink with grilled lobster tail

Lavender Ridge 2003 Sierra Foothills Grenache $23.99

The dark ruby color intrigues one while this juicy spice bomb with copious quantities of raspberry, cherry and strawberries shows well through the nose and palate. Its superb fruit and medium body is succulent and ripe. The finish is redolent of vanilla and cocoa and sports moderate fine knit tannins.

Try with penne pasta, sausage and mushrooms
