Weekly wine picks for 9-4-05

Santa Julia 2005 Mendoza Torrontes $6.99 (Argentina)

This intriguing white from Argentina has fragrant, floral nose with fresh, ripe muscat and Gewurz-like aromas rose petals, lychee with a good dose of acidity and delicious flavors of apple, white currant, grapefruit and melon with a hint of mineral and a mild, pleasing acidity. Overall it is a nicely balanced wine with a clean finish. Makes a nice change of pace--at a no-risk price.

Drink with tandoori chicken

Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo 2003 Carmenere (Chile)

The light to medium-bodied 2003 Carmenere is Exuberant on the nose, with rich blackberry, fleshy plum and notes of vanilla. Generous and bright on the palate, where cherry and blackberry flavors start vividly and then are softened by creamy, chocolaty oak. The finish is big, jammy and long with even tannins

Drink with lamb chops
